Gerhard Winters to Mozambique for UNDAC team

On Sunday 24 March our Senior Specialist Geohydrologist Gerhard Winters left for Mozambique for three weeks as part of a 'European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operation'. The UNDAC team will take urgent decisions about water safety, among other things.

This operation is part of the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC). Gerhard, as Water and Environmental Expert, is part of the UNDAC team on site to take urgent decisions regarding water safety, such as the assessment of dams. Gerhard is the only technical EU employee.

On 15 March 2019, cyclone Idai wreaked havoc in southeastern Africa. Mozambique has been badly hit, it is feared that the situation will turn into the biggest weather-related natural disaster ever in this region.

The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) is part of the international disaster response system for sudden-onset emergencies. UNDAC is intended to assist the United Nations and governments of disaster stricken countries during the first phase of a sudden-emergency situation.
